2008 Summer Family Learn to Sail Vacations

Take your family on a super learning adventure!
Sailing is the ultimate “green” activity. Good for you. Good for the world.

On land, many share adventures while traveling on RV land-cruisers but the high cost of fuel has families switching to the water to enjoy free time together. On lakes, bays and oceans sailing makes use of wind-driven power, rather than using precious, carbon-making resources.

That “green-good” feeling, coupled with the special bonding that evolves when everyone in the family learns to sail together, is priceless.

And, we’ve even set a special Single Parents Week, July 13-18 to share with your children and meet others “in the same boat”, so to speak.

TAKE THE WHOLE BOAT – A SPECIAL PRIVATE FAMILY COURSE
If you take the whole boat, you pay just three tuitions, the rest are free!
Whether you are a family of four or as many as six, you pay for just three tuitions while learning aboard together. Accommodations are extra as shown below, but in most cases kids stay free in the same room with parents as long as existing beds are used. Your savings on tuitions represents over $1000 for a family of four, close to $4,000 for a family of six!
Two adults are required for this program.

Click here for complete information and rates.

Please book by May 30 to save $1000-$4000!

A FLORIDA VACATION YOU’LL LONG REMEMBER
The Private Family Courses are offered at three special Florida locations: June through October 2008. But you must sign up by May 30, 2008 to get the family discount.

Join Other Single Parents in July
on the Gulf Coast of Florida

If you are a Single Parent,
you can bring one to three children (ages 7-17) on a special week at the Pink Shell Beach Resort and Spa on Ft. Myers Beach. This program is designed to bring kids and their parents together with others ‘in the same boat.'

Be prepared . . . this week is a blast, a terrific chance for you and your children to make new friends in a relaxed atmosphere where everyone’s focus is on sailing and learning a new skill. The dates for this special week are July 13-18.

What it Includes
Fast Track to Cruising® and Dive Package

Plan to arrive Sunday evening, August 17 and depart Sunday, August 24 – tanned, very skilled, deliciously bushed, and confident in your ability to enjoy life to the max.

Your productive and rewarding week includes morning sailing classrooms, half-day on-water sailing instruction and half-day diving instruction each day.

Learn to Sail students learn on award-winning Colgate 26 sailboats – fast and sophisticated with a huge cockpit and all the go-fast features you need for sheer fun.

Bareboat Cruising Preparation students learn on a brand new Hunter 41DS cruising boat – another award-winner with beautiful lines and superb handling capability.

The Dive Course is taught by Dive Duck Key on their boats located in the same marina with ours. In preparation for certification at the end of your dive course, you will need to go on-line to complete your e-learning at www.padi.com before starting the course.

A Sample of Your Schedule for the Week

Plan to arrive on Sunday, check in anytime 4 p.m. or later at Hawk’s Cay Resort. Then relax and get to know this beautifully renovated resort on Duck Key, which is located 60 miles north of Key West and 90 miles south of Miami in the Florida Keys.

Monday morning you will be assigned to one of two groups, alternating sailing and diving mornings and afternoons throughout the week. Monday through Wednesday, you’ll participate in classroom and on-water sailing instruction, with dive instruction in the pool. Then Thursday, in addition to the normal sailing instruction schedule you’ll do your first open-water dive.

On Friday each group enjoys a practice sail without the instructor aboard and an open water dive – finishing the day with a fun graduation party on the marina deck after your last dive or sail.

Saturday is a day to relax by the pool, the salt water or go exploring. Flights cannot be taken within 24 hours of a deep water dive, so this is an ideal opportunity to take advantage of all the other great activities there are at Hawk’s Cay and on the Keys.

Sunday is departure day for home – a certified sailor, certified diver, and certified achiever bar none.

Your entire package is $2425 per person, double occupancy.

Add $200 if you are taking the Cruising course instead of Learn to Sail.

Add $580 for single accommodations.

Accommodations are in a standard room. If you wish to upgrade to a water view room or villa, please call for rates.

Your package includes:

  • The Learn to Sail course taught on a Colgate 26 with US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification
  • Or the Bareboat Cruising Preparation course with US SAILING Basic Cruising and Bareboat Cruising certifications
  • Our textbooks for the sailing course you choose
  • Complete dive course taught by the experts at Dive Duck Key with PADI certification if you accomplished the pre-course e-learning section
  • All required textbooks for the dive course
  • Seven nights accommodations in a standard room at Hawk’s Cay Resort (double occupancy)
  • Graduation party with sailing and dive certificates awarded

If you are new to sailing and your goal is to ultimately go cruising . . . come in three days early for our Fast Track to Cruising® course.

Plan to arrive Thursday, August 14 and relax a bit before you jump into the course.

You’ll take the Learn to Sail course in three fast-paced days Friday through Sunday; then start the Bareboat Cruising Preparation course on Monday along with your PADI Dive course.

The Fast Track to Cruising® and Dive Program package is $3970 per person, double occupancy.

This includes a $200 discount on the combined Learn to Sail and Bareboat Cruising Preparation courses; our Fast Track to Cruising book, ten nights accommodations in a standard room, the Dive course and textbooks, plus a separate Learn to Sail graduation celebration after your practice sail.

Add $820 for a single room.

Whichever combination you choose, the required pre-course dive e-learning portion (which costs about $120) is not included in any of the packages above. If you are driving and wish to leave on Saturday, we can deduct the last night hotel from your package IF you let us know when you first sign up.

To sign up, please call Offshore Sailing School at 800-221-4326.

Lose sight of land and experience the splendor of blue water cruising.
Introducing Offshore's most exciting course for cruising sailors…

Fast Track to Coastal Passage Making™

Setting your sights on some serious, long-distance cruising with only the deep blue sea on the horizon? If you've mastered basic cruising and navigation skills, you're ready to get down to the brass tacks of coastal passage making.

The world is 75% water. This course makes every drop of it a friendlier place by giving you the skills and confidence for smarter, safer cruising. This is blue water cruising – your ticket to the world under sail. And, the most advanced cruising course you'll find.

Like Fast Track to Cruising®, this course combines two courses:  Coastal Navigation and Coastal Passage Making in the balmy Caribbean. After completing your 4-day in-depth Coastal Navigation course ashore in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, you’ll set sail for the Leeward Islands, tacking into the easterly trade winds. Depending on weather conditions, you'll make landfall on Anguilla, St. Martin or St. Barts and return on an 80+ mile journey each way across the Anegada Passage.

Here's how it works:
While staying at the Mariner Inn at the Moorings charter base in Tortola, you spend four days (approximately six hours per day) learning the skills that insure safe and successful navigation in coastal and offshore waters. The course is filled with hands-on chart work and navigation exercises, conducted by a senior US SAILING certified instructor, and culminates with a comprehensive exam. With US SAILING Level 4 certification in hand, you now possess the confidence to safely navigate through challenging conditions, shallow waters, changing tides, currents and low visibility.

Immediately following graduation of your Coastal Navigation course, you board a 50’ Moorings yacht and start testing your skills and confidence 24/7 offshore! You’ll do night watches as you lose sight of land, cook underway, and make at least one nightfall landing. You’ll navigate each passage; learn about dealing with whatever the weather brings, shipping and other vessels identified by lights at night, and practice safe and efficient boat handling skills.

Length of passages and final destinations depend on wind and weather conditions.

Fast Track to Passage Making™ Schedule and Sample Itinerary: (Subject to change)

Day 9: Downwind overnight passage back to Tortola
Day 10:  Arrive in Road Town, Tortola and move ashore to Mariner Inn
Departure Day: Depart for home

Pre-Requisites for US SAILING Certification:
Coastal Navigation Course – basic navigation skills required

Passage Making Course – US SAILING Coastal Navigation and Bareboat Cruising certification required (the latter may be achieved any week in the BVI in Offshore’s Live Aboard Cruising course).

Fast Track to Passage Making graduates are tested at US SAILING Levels 4 and 5 provided all pre-requisites have been met.

Need more knowledge, experience and certification first?
If you have Basic Keelboat certification, you can take our Live Aboard Cruising course offered each week in the BVI right after the Coastal Navigation course.

“"Most memorable was our first night sail, leaving the BVI and tacking east to St. Martin…awesome. I was on the final watch of the night, steering by the stars, a very peaceful experience, when suddenly the horizon turned pink and the sun rose above the calm. I had never experienced a sunrise at sea before, and I'll never forget my first one."
