A chain of cays and colorful character

The best of Bahamas sailing is just 100 miles from Florida’s mainland. Once the home of swashbuckling privateers, one of the world’s great cruising areas is found in the clear, reef-protected waters of the spectacular Abacos. Relaxed, smooth sailing is virtually assured here, making this a favorite sailing spot for families, couples and sailors of all skill levels.

Like a string of exquisite pearls, a delightful array of closely arranged sandy cays to the east offer numerous protected anchorages that beckon to be explored. Popular stops include Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Man-o’-War Cay, Tahiti Beach and Hope Town, with its famous candy-striped lighthouse. Local cuisine includes the freshest fish, lobster and the best cracked conch you’ll ever taste!

The mood is relaxed and the Bahamians are a delight. And when you see the extraordinary color of the water surrounding these islands during your inbound flight, you’ll know you’ve arrived at a perfect location for your Offshore sailing vacation.

You'll spend your first night at the Moorings base aboard the Moorings catamaran you will learn on. The yacht should be available for boarding anytime after noon. Most Moorings yachts have 220V or 110V plugs and a 12V outlet.

Your last night is ashore at the Conch Inn, a quaint, one-story island-style hotel right at the marina base, included in your package. Its bedrooms are small, each with two double beds (rollaways are available for extra occupants). Bathrooms are small but neatly kept with shower-tub combinations.

On the premises is an open-air swimming pool fringed with palm trees, and a branch of the Dive Abaco scuba facility. A number of small sandy beaches are within walking distance. Bistro Mezzamare, the on-site restaurant and bar, is recommended. Nearby is the more upscale Abaco Beach Resort with a variety of accommodations overlooking the water and marina, a large swimming pool, and sandy beach. Our sales team can request rooms here for your last night at additional charge.

This area is perfect for a learning vacation aboard. With generally shallow waters, navigation lessons take on greater meaning. On most passages you’ll enjoy a nice 1-2 hour sail. Trade winds blow anywhere from 5-20 knots, with higher gusts in winter months. The entire cruising ground is protected by a barrier reef, which moderate sea conditions year-round, and occasionally challenging conditions in the winter. Weather averages 77-89F degrees year-round. Water temperatures are never below 72F degrees.
